Gamification: Coins, Levels, and Rewards

How to motivate students to attend lessons and submit homework: coins, levels, stickers, a reward store, and activity streaks.

Updated:

Gamification in Mimiao combines coins, levels, stickers, streaks and a reward store. One school-wide switch turns it on or off for the whole tenant.

Coins

Coins are the core currency of gamification. Students earn them automatically for:

  • Attending a lesson — credited after the lesson is marked complete.
  • Submitting homework on time — before the deadline.
  • Completing a vocabulary session — after a spaced repetition practice round.

The coin value for each action is configurable by the school owner — you might award more for lessons and less for homework, or the reverse, depending on your school’s priorities.

Levels

Accumulated coins advance students through 10 levels. The school chooses a ready-made nautical or neutral theme. Level names and thresholds are fixed within each theme.

A student’s level is displayed in their profile and in the group leaderboard. Reaching a new level is a natural moment for a teacher sticker or an automated congratulation.

Stickers

Stickers are instant emotional rewards. There are two types:

Built-in (~20 stickers) — “Well done”, “Great effort”, “Star of the week”, and more. They’re ready to use out of the box.

Custom school stickers — an administrator can upload an image and name, making it available to all teachers.

Giving a sticker

Teachers give stickers in two clicks — directly from the lesson completion screen or from a homework review: tap “Sticker” → choose one. The student sees it in their dashboard immediately.

Automatic stickers

The system awards stickers automatically for achievements:

  • First homework submitted.
  • First no-miss streak (7 lessons in a row).
  • A personal best streak.

Reward store

The reward store is where coins become real prizes. Your school adds items (e.g., “B1 level book”, “Sticker pack”, “Lesson with a native speaker”) and sets each item’s coin price.

A student browses the store, chooses a reward, and redeems their coins. The order goes to the administrator:

  • Approve — the item is delivered, coins are deducted permanently.
  • Reject — coins are returned to the student in full.

Streaks

A streak is the number of consecutive days a student had any activity (attended a lesson, submitted homework, practiced vocabulary). The streak resets if a full day passes without any activity.

Bonus coins are awarded at 7, 30 and 100 days: 20, 75 and 250 coins respectively. These values are fixed.

Group leaderboard

Each group page has a leaderboard ranked by coins earned in the last 30 days. The rolling window — not a lifetime total — gives less-active students a real chance to climb, keeping competition healthy.

Settings

Enable or disable gamification in Settings → Gamification. The switch applies to the whole school; there is no separate per-group setting. The same page lets you configure coin values for core actions and select a ready-made level theme. When gamification is off, coins and levels are hidden from students.

Coins earned in the reward system also reflect vocabulary practice — see how spaced repetition and the vocabulary module keep learning going between lessons.
